Health & Safety Manager
Location: Ashton-in-Makerfield
Salary: Up to £55,000 per annum + Company Car
Role: Permanent | Full-Time

Looking for a Health & Safety role where you can be out on site, close to the operation and genuinely influence how things are done?

This is an opportunity to take on a highly visible role within a busy civil engineering and heavy operational environment, supporting teams to maintain high standards of health, safety and compliance.

As Health & Safety Manager, you’ll combine strong technical knowledge with a practical understanding of site-based operations. You’ll spend time out in the field, working with managers and operational teams to identify risks, improve working practices and make sure health and safety remains part of how the business operates day to day.

This isn’t about managing health and safety from behind a desk. You’ll need to understand the realities of working around plant, equipment and changing site conditions, building credibility with the people doing the job and providing practical solutions that work.

What you’ll be doing

• Driving continuous improvement across health, safety, environmental and quality performance
• Providing practical advice, guidance and coaching to site managers and operational teams
• Carrying out site audits, inspections and risk assessments and ensuring actions are followed through
• Reviewing RAMS, COSHH assessments, safe working procedures and operational controls
• Supporting safe working practices around plant, equipment and site-based activities
• Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses and identifying opportunities to prevent recurrence
• Delivering toolbox talks, coaching and health and safety awareness training
• Monitoring compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation
• Identifying trends and producing clear health and safety performance reporting
• Supporting the development and continuous improvement of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems
• Working with external auditors and regulatory bodies where required
• Promoting a proactive safety culture and encouraging ownership of health and safety at every level

What we’re looking forWe’re looking for someone who understands the challenges of health and safety within a fast-moving, site-based environment and can combine technical knowledge with a practical, solutions-focused approach.

You’ll ideally come from a civil engineering or heavy operational background, which could include construction, infrastructure, highways, aggregates, environmental services, engineering or plant-based operations.

You’ll also bring:

• NEBOSH or an equivalent health and safety qualification
• Strong working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation
• Experience within site-based or operational environments
• Experience carrying out audits, investigations and risk assessments
• Strong knowledge of RAMS and safe systems of work
• Knowledge of environmental compliance and management systems
• Experience with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and/or ISO 45001
• Strong communication skills with the confidence to coach, challenge and influence
• The ability to build credibility with site management and frontline teams
• A hands-on approach and willingness to spend time out in the operation
